Punta Prima: Between Two Coastal Cities

Among the many districts that make up Orihuela Costa, Punta Prima occupies a unique position. Unlike La Zenia, Cabo Roig, or Campoamor, Punta Prima has never belonged entirely to a single identity. Geographically, historically, and socially, it sits between two worlds: the municipality of Orihuela and the city of Torrevieja.

This unique location has shaped its development for decades, transforming what was once a quiet stretch of coastline into one of the most accessible and cosmopolitan residential areas on the southern Costa Blanca.

Today, Punta Prima is known for its seafront promenade, beaches, modern residential developments, and vibrant international community. Yet its story begins long before the arrival of tourism and apartment complexes.

The Meaning of Punta Prima

The name Punta Prima comes from Spanish geographical terminology.

“Punta” means a point or headland extending into the sea, while “prima” is believed to refer to its position as one of the first prominent coastal points encountered when travelling south from Torrevieja.

For centuries, this section of coastline was recognised primarily as a natural landmark. Fishermen, sailors, and local farmers knew the area for its rocky shoreline, elevated viewpoints, and proximity to the Mediterranean.

Unlike some neighbouring districts, Punta Prima did not develop around a historic estate or agricultural settlement. Its identity was always linked to its position along the coast.

A Coastline Shaped by Nature

Long before roads, hotels, or residential complexes appeared, Punta Prima was characterised by rugged cliffs, small coves, and open Mediterranean landscapes.

The nearby salt lakes of Torrevieja played an important role in the region’s development. Since Roman times, salt extraction has been one of the area’s most important economic activities, helping establish Torrevieja as a significant coastal settlement.

Although Punta Prima itself was not directly involved in the salt industry, its proximity to the salt lakes and maritime routes connected it to the broader history of the region.

For generations, the coastline remained largely undeveloped, serving primarily as a natural boundary between agricultural lands and the sea.

The Border Between Two Municipalities

One of Punta Prima’s most fascinating characteristics is its location on the boundary between two municipalities.

Today, part of Punta Prima belongs to Orihuela Costa, while another part falls within the municipality of Torrevieja.

This division has contributed to the area’s distinctive character.

Residents benefit from immediate access to the services, shopping, healthcare, and urban infrastructure of Torrevieja, while also enjoying the residential environment and coastal lifestyle associated with Orihuela Costa.

Over time, the border became less important in daily life. People living in Punta Prima often move seamlessly between both municipalities, creating a community that feels connected to both places.

Few areas on the Costa Blanca enjoy such a strategic position.

The Tourism Boom Arrives

The transformation of Punta Prima began during the tourism expansion of the 1960s and 1970s.

As international visitors started discovering the Costa Blanca, developers recognised the potential of this coastline. Punta Prima offered several advantages that distinguished it from neighbouring areas:

  • Close proximity to Torrevieja

  • Direct access to the sea

  • Excellent transport connections

  • Beautiful coastal views

  • Relatively undeveloped land

Unlike Dehesa de Campoamor, which was built around a historic estate, or Villamartín, which grew around golf, Punta Prima’s development was driven primarily by its location.

Its proximity to an established city made it particularly attractive for buyers seeking both coastal living and urban convenience.

From Holiday Destination to Residential Community

Initially, many properties in Punta Prima were purchased as holiday homes.

However, as international migration to Spain increased during the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, the area gradually evolved into a permanent residential community.

British, Scandinavian, Belgian, Dutch, German, and Irish residents were among the first groups to establish strong communities here.

The appeal was easy to understand.

Residents could enjoy beachside living while remaining just minutes from supermarkets, hospitals, schools, restaurants, and shopping centres.

This combination of convenience and lifestyle became one of Punta Prima’s defining strengths.

The Seafront Promenade

One of the features that most distinguishes Punta Prima today is its coastal promenade.

Stretching along the Mediterranean shoreline, the promenade offers spectacular sea views and connects residents with beaches, restaurants, and leisure areas.

Unlike some sections of the Costa Blanca where development dominates the coastline, Punta Prima has managed to maintain strong visual connections to the sea.

Walking along the promenade, it is easy to understand why the area became so popular among both residents and visitors.

The Mediterranean is not simply a backdrop—it remains the heart of daily life.

Modern Punta Prima

The twenty-first century brought a new phase of growth.

Modern residential developments, including apartment complexes and contemporary communities, began appearing alongside older villas and traditional properties.

This created a diverse housing market capable of attracting:

  • Families

  • Retirees

  • Digital nomads

  • Property investors

  • Second-home owners

The area also benefited from its proximity to major attractions such as Zenia Boulevard, Torrevieja city centre, and several renowned golf courses.

Today, Punta Prima is often viewed as one of the most practical locations on the southern Costa Blanca, offering a balance between coastal tranquillity and urban accessibility.

A Community Defined by Connection

What makes Punta Prima unique is not a golf course, a historic estate, or a marina.

Its identity comes from connection.

It connects Orihuela Costa with Torrevieja.

It connects residential life with city services.

It connects the Mediterranean coastline with one of the most dynamic regions of the Costa Blanca.

For decades, this strategic position has attracted people seeking the best of both worlds.

Between Past and Future

The story of Punta Prima is ultimately a story of geography.

A simple coastal headland became a bridge between municipalities, communities, and lifestyles.

What began as a quiet stretch of Mediterranean coastline evolved into one of the most sought-after residential areas in the region, while still retaining the sea views and coastal character that first attracted people here.

Today, Punta Prima stands as one of the clearest examples of how location can shape identity. Neither fully Torrevieja nor entirely Orihuela Costa, it has become something unique: a thriving coastal community that brings together the best of both worlds.
