The Best Time to Visit Altea on the Costa Blanca in May 2025?

If you’re a fan of tapas, then without a doubt, the best time is during the Ruta de la Tapa, which took place from May 9th to 18th this year.

For ten delicious days, local bars and restaurants across Altea served their signature tapas paired with a drink, inviting visitors to stroll through the town’s charming streets and discover the region’s flavors one bite at a time.

In Spain, tapas are more than just food. They’re a way of life. The tradition dates back centuries. One legend says King Alfonso X the Wise ordered taverns to serve small portions of food with alcohol to prevent drinking on an empty stomach. Another story suggests that tapas began as a slice of bread or ham placed over a glass of wine to keep out flies and dust.

Whatever the origin, tapas have become a beloved ritual focused on sharing, slowing down, and enjoying good company.

As I walked through Altea’s stone streets, surrounded by white houses and stunning sea views, the air was filled with the scent of Mediterranean spices. I could hear the cheerful sounds of people enjoying their food and time together.

If you’re visiting the Costa Blanca, don’t miss the chance to explore Altea for yourself.
