Last Sunday, we had the chance to attend one of the most spectacular events on the Costa Cálida. The San Javier International Air Show over the shores of the Mar Menor was a breathtaking celebration of aviation, adrenaline and national pride.

San Javier is home to one of Spain’s top military aviation academies, where elite pilots have been trained since 1943. The airshow offers a rare opportunity to witness their incredible skills in action, attracting both aviation enthusiasts and families.

This year’s edition welcomed a record-breaking audience of up to 500,000 people, making it the largest airshow in Spain in 2025. The wide skies over the Mar Menor created a perfect natural stage for the aerial performances.

Watching the Spanish flag take shape in the sky was a moment to remember. Red and yellow, colors that speak of pride, passion and sunshine. For locals, they reflect history and identity. For expats, they may carry something more personal like wine at sunset, the glow of Mediterranean light and the feeling of a dream coming true.

Interestingly, the colors of the Spanish flag were originally chosen in 1785 for practical reasons. At that time, most European naval flags were based on white, making them hard to distinguish at sea. To solve this, King Charles III selected the red and yellow combination from twelve designs to ensure Spain’s flag would be clearly visible. Over time, these colors came to represent far more than visibility. They became a lasting symbol of identity, unity and pride.

The Mar Menor area offers exciting opportunities for relocation and property investment. If you’re interested in discovering more and finding your own personal meaning behind the colors of the Spanish flag, let’s get in touch. 🇪🇸
