Lomas de Campoamor: Golf Drives Growth
When people hear the name Campoamor, they often think of the beaches, marina, and pine forests of Dehesa de Campoamor. Yet just a few kilometres inland lies another community with its own unique identity and story: Lomas de Campoamor.
Although it shares the Campoamor name, Lomas de Campoamor developed very differently from its coastal neighbour. While Dehesa de Campoamor grew from a historic estate overlooking the Mediterranean, Lomas de Campoamor emerged decades later as part of the transformation of Orihuela Costa into one of Europe’s most popular destinations for golf, residential living, and international relocation.
Today, it is one of the most established inland residential areas of Orihuela Costa, known for its elevated views, proximity to championship golf courses, and vibrant international community.
Before the Urbanisation
Until the late twentieth century, the landscape that now forms Lomas de Campoamor looked very different.
The area consisted mainly of agricultural land, open countryside, and gently rolling hills situated between the Mediterranean coast and the interior of the Vega Baja region.
For generations, farming was the dominant activity. Citrus groves, almond trees, olive trees, and dry agricultural fields shaped the landscape. The area was sparsely populated, with only a handful of rural properties scattered across the countryside.
Few could have imagined that this quiet terrain would one day become home to thousands of residents from across Europe.
The Rise of Golf Tourism
The story of Lomas de Campoamor is closely connected to the rise of golf tourism on the Costa Blanca.
During the 1970s and 1980s, developers began recognising that the region’s mild climate offered ideal conditions for year-round golf. While much of Europe experienced cold winters, golfers could continue playing under the Mediterranean sun.
The success of nearby Villamartín Golf, which opened in 1972, demonstrated the enormous potential of golf-related development in southern Alicante.
This success encouraged further investment, leading to the creation of additional courses and residential communities designed to serve both golfers and permanent residents.
One of the most significant milestones came with the opening of the Real Club de Golf Campoamor in 1988.
Situated among natural valleys and elevated terrain, the course quickly established itself as one of the finest golf destinations on the Costa Blanca. Its championship layout, beautiful surroundings, and prestigious reputation attracted players from throughout Spain and Northern Europe.
The golf course would become the catalyst for the development of Lomas de Campoamor.
Building a Community Around Lifestyle
Unlike traditional Spanish towns, Lomas de Campoamor was never intended to be a historic village or tourist resort.
Instead, it was designed as a modern residential community focused on quality of life.
Developers recognised that many visitors who came to play golf wanted more than a holiday destination. They were searching for a place where they could spend longer periods of the year—or even relocate permanently.
The elevated location offered several advantages.
Residents could enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, nearby golf courses, and, in some locations, even distant views of the Mediterranean Sea.
At the same time, they remained just minutes away from beaches, shopping centres, restaurants, and essential services.
This combination of accessibility and tranquillity proved highly attractive.
Growth During the International Property Boom
The 1990s and early 2000s marked a period of rapid growth throughout Orihuela Costa.
Improved flight connections, growing international mobility, and increasing interest in Spain’s property market brought buyers from across Europe.
Lomas de Campoamor became particularly popular among residents from:
The United Kingdom
Belgium
The Netherlands
Germany
Scandinavia
Ireland
Many buyers were initially attracted by golf, but they soon discovered additional advantages.
Compared to some coastal developments, Lomas de Campoamor offered more space, quieter surroundings, and excellent value while still maintaining close access to beaches and leisure facilities.
As a result, the area evolved from a holiday destination into a genuine year-round residential community.
More Than Just Golf
Although golf played a major role in its development, Lomas de Campoamor is no longer defined solely by the sport.
Over the years, the area has developed into a diverse residential district attracting families, retirees, remote workers, and property investors.
Its location places residents within easy reach of some of the most important attractions in Orihuela Costa:
Real Club de Golf Campoamor
Villamartín Golf
Las Ramblas Golf
La Zenia Boulevard
The beaches of Campoamor, Cabo Roig, and La Zenia
This strategic position has helped make Lomas de Campoamor one of the most practical and convenient places to live in the area.
A Community for Modern Living
One of the defining characteristics of Lomas de Campoamor today is its year-round activity.
Unlike some coastal areas that experience dramatic seasonal changes, the community maintains a steady population throughout the year.
Residents enjoy a lifestyle centred around outdoor living, sports, social activities, and the Mediterranean climate.
Walking through the neighbourhood today, it is common to hear several languages spoken within a few minutes. The area reflects the international character that has become one of Orihuela Costa’s defining features.
At the same time, its quieter atmosphere offers a contrast to the busier tourist zones closer to the sea.
Lomas de Campoamor Today
Today, Lomas de Campoamor represents one of the success stories of modern Orihuela Costa.
What was once open agricultural land has evolved into a mature residential community where people from across Europe have chosen to build their lives.
Its appeal lies in a combination of factors:
Proximity to championship golf courses
Peaceful surroundings
Excellent infrastructure
International community
Easy access to beaches and services
Year-round Mediterranean lifestyle
These qualities continue to attract both new residents and property investors.
From Hillside to Community
The story of Lomas de Campoamor is a story of transformation.
Unlike Dehesa de Campoamor, whose roots stretch back to a historic estate, Lomas de Campoamor is a product of a more modern vision—one shaped by golf, international mobility, and changing lifestyles.
Yet despite its relatively recent origins, it has developed a strong identity of its own.
Today, Lomas de Campoamor stands as a testament to how thoughtful planning, sporting infrastructure, and the appeal of Mediterranean living can transform a quiet hillside landscape into one of the most successful residential communities on the Costa Blanca.
