Laguna Rosa, known as the Pink Lake of Torrevieja, is one of the most extraordinary natural wonders in Spain. Its surreal rose-colored waters attract visitors from around the world, but this unique lake offers much more than just stunning views. Behind its beauty lies a fascinating history and remarkable health benefits.

The origins of the lake stretch back thousands of years. Formed as a natural basin near the Mediterranean coast, it has served as a valuable site for salt extraction since ancient times. Historical evidence suggests that salt was harvested here by the Iberians and later by the Romans, making this area one of the oldest known salt production centers in Europe. Organized salt production began to develop more seriously around the 13th century, long before the large-scale operations that expanded in the 17th century. Today, Torrevieja remains one of Europe’s top producers of sea salt, with huge white salt mountains standing near the lake as proof of its continuing importance.

What makes Laguna Rosa truly special is its intense pink color. This rare phenomenon is caused by extremely high salinity combined with the presence of microorganisms such as Dunaliella salina algae and halobacteria, which thrive in these extreme conditions. Only a few lakes in Europe share this feature, including some in southern France and Sicily, but the lake in Torrevieja stands out as particularly striking.

The area around the lake is now a protected natural park. Walking and cycling paths allow visitors to explore its peaceful surroundings, which are home to flamingos, herons, and even wild foxes. Although swimming in the lake is not allowed, the air itself is believed to have healing properties. Rich in salt and minerals, it can support respiratory health and improve skin conditions.

Laguna Rosa is more than just a beautiful place. It is a destination where nature, history, and wellbeing come together. Visiting the pink lake is an unforgettable experience and a highlight of any trip to the Costa Blanca.
